What is JWT?

JWT is an open standard (RFC 7519) for securely transmitting information between parties as a JSON object. It is often used for authentication and information exchange in web applications. A JWT consists of three parts:

Header: Contains metadata about the token, such as the type of token and the signing algorithm used (e.g., HMAC SHA256 or RSA).
Payload: The claims, or information, being transmitted, such as user ID, expiration time (exp), and roles.
Signature: A cryptographic signature generated using the header, payload, and a secret key (or public/private keys in the case of RSA).

When a user logs in, the server generates a JWT and sends it to the client. The client then includes the token in the headers of subsequent requests, allowing the server to validate and identify the user without needing to store any session data on the server.

Why JWTs Are Often Criticized

Despite the advantages, JWTs are not without their drawbacks. Here are the primary reasons why many experts advise against using JWTs for authentication:

1. Security Vulnerabilities

1.1. Lack of Built-in Encryption

JWTs are not encrypted by default; they are only encoded. This means that if an attacker intercepts a JWT, they can easily decode the payload to view its contents. Although sensitive information like passwords shouldn’t be stored in JWTs, the lack of encryption makes it easier for attackers to gain insight into the token’s structure and possibly exploit it.
To encrypt a JWT, you would need to use JWE (JSON Web Encryption), which adds complexity and may not be as widely supported or implemented as the basic JWT.

1.2. Signature Algorithm Vulnerabilities

JWTs often use algorithms like HMAC SHA256 or RSA to sign the token. However, the implementation of these algorithms can introduce vulnerabilities:
If developers mistakenly configure the JWT to use an algorithm like none, attackers can craft their own token and bypass authentication.
Developers may also misuse or fail to properly validate the token signature, leading to potential tampering risks.

1.3. Token Hijacking and Replay Attacks

Since JWTs are stored client-side (often in localStorage, sessionStorage, or cookies), they are susceptible to cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks if not handled securely.
Even if an attacker gains access to a JWT, they can reuse it until it expires, unless measures like token invalidation or rotating tokens are implemented.

2. Challenges with Token Management

2.1. No Built-in Mechanism for Revocation

One of the biggest drawbacks of JWTs is their stateless nature. Unlike traditional server-side sessions, JWTs do not have a built-in mechanism for revocation.
If a user logs out or a token is compromised, there is no straightforward way to invalidate the token on the server. The token remains valid until it expires, which can be a significant security risk.
To implement revocation, developers often resort to blacklisting or maintaining a token database, which contradicts the stateless design that JWTs aim to provide.

2.2. Inflexibility with Token Expiration

JWTs typically include an expiration (exp) claim that defines when the token becomes invalid. However, if you want to shorten or extend the token's lifespan dynamically (e.g., log the user out early or extend their session), it becomes challenging to do so without stateful server management.
Refresh tokens are sometimes used to issue new JWTs before they expire, but this adds complexity and opens up potential security vulnerabilities if not implemented correctly.

3. Size and Performance Issues

3.1. Large Payloads

JWTs are self-contained, meaning all information required for validation and authorization is stored within the token itself. While this can be convenient, it can also lead to large token sizes, especially when additional claims (e.g., user roles, permissions, or metadata) are added.
Large tokens consume more bandwidth and increase latency, especially in mobile or low-bandwidth environments. They also increase the size of headers in every HTTP request, impacting performance.

3.2. Transmission and Storage Risks

JWTs are often stored in localStorage or cookies. LocalStorage is vulnerable to XSS attacks, while cookies need to be carefully configured (e.g., with HttpOnly, Secure, and SameSite attributes) to prevent cross-site request forgery (CSRF) and XSS attacks. Improper handling of JWT storage can lead to serious security risks.

4. Complexity and Misconfiguration Risks

4.1. Implementing Secure JWT Authentication is Complex

While JWTs might seem straightforward initially, implementing them securely can be complex. Developers need to:
Properly configure signing algorithms and validate them.
Set up secure storage mechanisms that prevent XSS and CSRF.
Implement token expiration, refresh, and rotation mechanisms without introducing vulnerabilities.
Manage logout and token invalidation, which often requires additional infrastructure (like token blacklists or short-lived access tokens combined with refresh tokens).
Many developers fall into the trap of misconfiguring these aspects, leading to potential security gaps.

4.2. JWT Best Practices Aren’t Always Followed

Not all developers follow best practices when implementing JWTs, leading to common issues such as:
Storing sensitive information in the token payload.
Not validating the token’s signature properly.
Using insecure algorithms or failing to enforce HTTPS connections.

When to Use JWTs

Despite these concerns, JWTs can still be useful in certain scenarios where their benefits outweigh the risks:

Stateless Microservices: JWTs are useful in microservice architectures where services need to authenticate requests without maintaining state.
APIs: For APIs that require stateless authentication, JWTs offer a convenient method to transmit user information securely (when implemented correctly).
Short-Lived Tokens: When JWTs are issued with very short expiration times (e.g., minutes), the risk of token misuse is minimized.

Alternatives to JWT

Given the drawbacks, many developers prefer alternatives that provide more flexibility and security:

Session-Based Authentication: Traditional server-side sessions are stored in a database or memory, allowing easy invalidation and revocation. This approach works well when scaling is manageable and does not require a fully stateless architecture.
OAuth2 with Access and Refresh Tokens: A more secure alternative where access tokens are short-lived and refresh tokens are used to obtain new access tokens. This method also allows token revocation and can be used with JWTs or other token types.
Paseto (Platform-Agnostic Security Tokens): An alternative to JWT that addresses some of its flaws, such as susceptibility to algorithm confusion attacks. Paseto is designed to be more secure by default.

While JWTs offer several advantages for building stateless and scalable applications, they come with significant security and implementation challenges. Many experts recommend against using JWTs, especially when developers cannot guarantee secure implementation. Alternatives like session-based authentication, OAuth2, or even Paseto provide safer and more flexible options.

Before implementing JWT, carefully consider your application’s requirements and constraints. If you choose to use JWT, follow best practices and thoroughly review your implementation to mitigate the risks highlighted above.
